What is the Green Man
Green Man is an independent visual research project dedicated to documenting sculpted or painted representations of the human face from which leaves, shoots, or branches grow – a motif known in art history as the foliate head or phytomorphic figure.
This symbol, whose origins predate the Middle Ages and are rooted in pre-Christian nature cultures, has traversed eras, styles, and regions, being associated with the idea of rebirth, vegetal cycles, and the profound connection between humanity and the living world.
In the Romanian space, the oldest known representations of the Green Man appear in the medieval period, particularly in the fortified churches of Transylvania. Later, the motif reappears in Brâncovenesc architectural decoration and expands during the 18th and 19th centuries, alongside the development of Neoclassical, Neo-Renaissance, and Eclectic styles, reaching the modernist reinterpretations of the early 20th century.

The purpose of this project
Green Man was born from the desire to bring to light a universal symbol of the relationship between humanity and nature, present in Romania’s visual heritage but often overlooked. Documenting these vegetal figures—whether carved on medieval churches, hidden within the window frames of 19th-century houses, or painted in interior details—helps us understand how an archaic motif was adopted, reinterpreted, and preserved throughout the centuries.
The project aims to build a visual and symbolic map of the Green Man's presence in Romania, gathering images, historical contexts, and interpretations that link local heritage to the wider European context.
- imagini de detaliu și de ansamblu;
- localizare și context arhitectural;
- informații istorice (datare, stil, posibile surse iconografice);
