It bears one of the earliest known representations of a foliate head\u2014a human face directly integrated into vegetal ornament\u2014identified to date in present-day Romania. In this piece, we can trace an early stage in the development of the Green Man motif and the emergence of an imagery of nature personified that would persist across the centuries and into the Middle Ages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capitelul apar\u021bine Antichit\u0103\u021bii t\u00e2rzii \u0219i reflect\u0103 adaptarea limbajului decorativ roman la un context provincial din spa\u021biul pontic. Forma este robust\u0103, iar decorul vegetal este organizat clar, f\u0103r\u0103 excese naturaliste. Frunzele de acant \u00eencadreaz\u0103 compozi\u021bia \u0219i conduc privirea c\u0103tre zona central\u0103, unde se concentreaz\u0103 elementul figurativ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pe una dintre fe\u021be, probabil fa\u021bada principal\u0103, o masc\u0103 uman\u0103 este integrat\u0103 \u00een decorul vegetal \u0219i concentreaz\u0103 aten\u021bia asupra zonei centrale a capitelului. Motivul floral central este transformat \u00eentr-un mascheron dezvoltat, care acoper\u0103 mare parte din corpul capitelului \u0219i se \u00eembin\u0103 cu frunzi\u0219ul din jur. De\u0219i suprafa\u021ba este afectat\u0103 de degrad\u0103ri, chipul p\u0103streaz\u0103 o expresivitate vizibil\u0103, sugerat\u0103 de modelarea fe\u021bei \u0219i de un z\u00e2mbet discret, indic\u00e2nd o concep\u021bie sculptural\u0103 mai elaborat\u0103 dec\u00e2t las\u0103 s\u0103 se vad\u0103 starea actual\u0103 de conservare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prin integrarea fe\u021bei umane \u00een structura decorului vegetal, capitelul de la Tomis se \u00eenscrie \u00eentr-o tradi\u021bie antic\u0103 a fe\u021bei vegetale, prezent\u0103 \u00een repertoriul decorativ al sculpturii romane.
